About Cloudland Canyon

Cloudland Canyon State Park, located on the western edge of Lookout Mountain in northwest Georgia, features stunning canyons, waterfalls, and rugged sandstone cliffs. Spanning over 3,500 acres, the park offers breathtaking views, hiking trails, and camping opportunities for visitors of all ages.

The park’s two main canyons—Sitton Gulch and Daniel Creek—feature cascading waterfalls, unique rock formations, and diverse plant life. Cloudland Canyon is considered one of Georgia’s most scenic parks, drawing photographers, hikers, and nature enthusiasts from across the Southeast.

Hiking & Trails

Cloudland Canyon offers over 30 miles of hiking and biking trails. The Canyon Rim Trail provides panoramic overlooks of the deep canyons, while the Waterfall Trail descends to the base of the park’s stunning waterfalls. Hikers can also explore backcountry trails for a more secluded experience.

Trails are well-marked with maps available at the visitor center. Some steep sections include staircases and handrails, making it accessible for experienced hikers, but sturdy footwear and water are recommended.

Waterfalls & Scenic Views

The park features two primary waterfalls—Hemlock Falls and Cherokee Falls—which are accessible via well-maintained trails. Visitors can enjoy the soothing sounds of cascading water and photograph dramatic canyon landscapes. Observation decks along the rim provide sweeping vistas of the surrounding Appalachian foothills.

Sunrise and sunset offer spectacular lighting for photography, highlighting the reddish sandstone cliffs and lush green foliage in spring and summer.

Camping & Lodging

Cloudland Canyon offers modern campsites with tent and RV accommodations, including water and electric hookups. The park also provides backcountry shelters and group camping areas for larger parties. Facilities include restrooms, showers, and picnic shelters.

While there is no lodge within the park, nearby towns such as Trenton and Chattanooga, TN offer hotel and cabin accommodations for visitors seeking more comfort.

Wildlife & Nature

The park hosts a wide variety of wildlife including white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, foxes, raccoons, and an assortment of songbirds. The sandstone cliffs provide nesting sites for hawks and vultures.

Seasonal wildflowers, mosses, and ferns grow abundantly along the trails and near waterfalls. The diverse habitats make Cloudland Canyon an excellent location for ecological studies, photography, and wildlife observation.

Visitor Tips

Spring and fall provide the best weather for hiking and exploring, while summer is ideal for camping and guided programs.
